"This church has meant for my family and I, a place of
happiness!  The Promise Church is a place to meet new friends,
and a place to come and feel welcomed, and feel as a part of
the family." - Zach Powell

Meeting at Worthing High School

The Houston Neighbor - March 2010
    By April Davis

It all started with a promise, “Work for me and I’ll bless the work of your
hands.”  A still, small voice quietly responded to the heart of a man in search
of purpose with a simple charge that directed him to destiny; start a church.
From then on, Pastor Maceo Smedley has been off and running.  Now, what
began with eight people from pulpit to pews, has developed into a full-
fledged, fully- functioning flock.  Found in the heart of Sunnyside in Worthing
High School, The Promise Church holds services each Sunday at 11 in the
auditorium.  The partnership between school and church has helped the
ministry better connect with and serve the south central Houston community.
To date, The Promise Church has begun a food pantry that helps feed
needy families, ministered to the elderly in nursing homes around the
surrounding Houston-area, conducted a fall-festival at the Boys & Girls Club
of greater Houston (5950 Selinsky), volunteered at various Reynold’s
Elementary School functions, donated books to the Johnson neighborhood
library, assisted at the ‘Pride in Sunnyside” event this past summer, and still
continues to seek out other ways to serve.

Equally as important, though, is that all the work that takes place outside the
walls of the church never negates the ministry that goes on within the walls of
the church.  Anyone stepping into Worthing High to worship with The
Promise, will immediately be enveloped in the spirit of love.  It is a home away
from home and an extended family where members and visitors of all ages,
cultures, and walks of life experience genuine warmth and connectedness.

Increasingly God’s love for Sunnyside is being expressed through a Pastor
with a heart for the community.  We don’t know what God has in store for the
growing church, but we do know that the Promise Church all began with just
    that, a promise.
